The Warnham Society
serving the parish of Warnham, West Sussex

The Tilletts Lane fields are an important habitat for local wildlife, especially butterflies. Four UK BAP (Biodiversity Action Plan) species have been identified so far making the site of both County and National importance.

With the kind permission of the landowner Jonathan Lucas and tenant farmer Dominic Gardner these fields have been informally set aside from agricultural use so the site can be monitored and managed for butterflies.

Starting in 2010 regular surveys have been conducted on a weekly basis between April and September to record numbers, locations and species of flying butterflies. The results of these surveys are submitted to the National Butterfly Conservation database.

Although the primary focus is on butterflies all local fauna and flora are being encouraged, so in 2011 the Warnham Society helped fund the erection of a new Barn Owl box on the site.

What a difference some sun makes ! On Sunday 22nd July's survey we counted 367 butterflies and 13 species, so a huge improvement on previous visits this year.

For general species identification try the facility on the Butterfly Conservation website. The photos below have all been taken at the Tilletts Lane Butterfly Reserve and represent the species identified so far.
